Atlanta Immigration Attorney Karen Weinstock Explains the New Proposed Legislation.
Atlanta immigration attorney Karen Weinstock analyzed the new proposed immigration legislation that Congress is now considering, the DREAM Act. While a few proposals have not yet made it to the table, a new compromise that addresses many of the Repulicans' concerns is now emerging and will be set up for a vote shortly in Congress' lame duck session.
The DREAM act offers a path to legalization for individuals who meet stringent eligibility criteria, among them are: they must have entered the United States before age 16; must have been here for five years or more; must not have committed any major crimes; must graduate from high school or the equivalent; and must complete at least two years of college or military service. Eligible students must first obtain conditional residency and complete the requirements before they can obtain a green card - a process that will take years.
"The DREAM act is not only the humane thing to do but also smart economically and socially", said Karen Weinstock, Atlanta immigration lawyer and the managing attorney of the Atlanta Immigration Law Firm Siskind Susser.
"The act will provide a legalization path to a deserving group of people who came here as young children and were educated in the U.S., and the children should not be penalized because their adult parents made the choice for them to enter illegally", said Weinstock, the Atlanta immigration lawyer.
"Most of these kids have already adjusted to our society and giving them the option to legalize their status as educated adults who contribute to this country makes a lot of sense", said Weinstock, the Atlanta immigration law attorney.
"There are many misconceptions about the benefits in the media, such as that this is an amnesty or that the DREAM act will use taxpayer dollars for scholarships and grants, but it is simply untrue. Students will have to pass through stringent criteria to qualify and pay back loans or work for any benefits they receive", said the head of the Atlanta Immigration Law Firm.
"Legalizing these students would only increase their earnings potential, as well as the U.S. tax base due to their higher earnings. A 2010 study by the UCLA estimates that the total earnings of DREAM Act beneficiaries over the course of their working lives would be between $1.4 trillion and $3.6 trillion, which is a positive economic gain", added the Atlanta immigration lawyer.
"Most U.S. colleges and universities support the measure, as they are going to benefit from the addition in students and revenue base, and the economy would benefit from a more educated young and eager workforce. But it not only makes economic sense, it is the right thing to do for these children, who should not pay for the sins of their parents", concluded the Atlanta immigration attorney.
