Bad publicity

THERE is no such thing as bad publicity, goes the adage. This is bunk. Just ask Toyota, a firm that once had a peerless reputation for reliability but spent much of last year battling allegations that its cars had defective accelerators. Or Sanlu, a Chinese company that was revealed to be peddling poisonous milk. It is now bankrupt and its top executives are in jail.

Yet if your starting point is obscurity, even bad publicity may be helpful, argues Alan Sorensen, an economics professor at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. He looked at the effect of book reviews in the New York Times. In a study published in Marketing Science, he found that well-known authors who earned glowing reviews for a new book could expect to sell 42% more copies, whereas a negative review caused sales to drop by 15%. For unknown authors, however, it did not matter whether a book was panned or lauded. Simply being reviewed in the Times bumped up sales by a third.

Mr Sorensen extrapolated his findings to other businesses. For small brands fighting for recognition in crowded markets, almost any publicity is beneficial, he reckons. One reason is that, for lesser-known brands, negative perceptions fade more quickly in consumers' minds than their general awareness of the product. When coming across a brand whose boss is, say, a philanderer, they recognise it but don't remember why. With established brands, on the other hand, the whiff of bad publicity lingers longer.

Mr Sorenson suspects that some consumers take pleasure in exploring the ridiculed. "Borat" (pictured above) made Kazakhstan sound awful, claiming among other things that its national anthem included the couplet "Kazakhstan's prostitutes cleanest in the region/ Except of course for Turkmenistan's." Yet the country received a fourfold increase in tourist inquiries after the film was released, observes Mr Sorenson.

There are some limits to the theory. Vitaly Borker, the founder of DecorMyEyes, an online optician, tried to generate publicity by replying abusively to dissatisfied customers, and even allegedly threatening some of them with violence. Mr Borker boasted to the New York Times that provoking masses of complaints bumped him to the top of Google searches for eyewear. His brilliant plan backfired, however: Mr Borker was arrested in December.

"We expect this year's competition to be the most competitive yet. Not only do we expect more teams and participants, we have consistently attracted some of the best STEM students in the state. This program gives students an opportunity to showcase their skills by developing web-based applications that can make a difference in the classroom," says Michael Robertson, Executive Director of TAG Education Collaborative.

The TAG Education Collaborative is dedicated to strengthening Georgia's future workforce by uniting Technology Association of Georgia (TAG) resources with leading education initiatives while emphasizing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Tino Mantella, President of Technology Association of Georgia (TAG) added, "The WEBChallenge program is one of the major initiatives to improve the workforce readiness of students in Georgia. While this has been a hot topic lately, TAG has been working to improve the readiness of our future workforce through the WEBChallenge program for nine years. This really gives our students a forum to learn real life development skills and to show their knowledge of STEM topics."

Denial is useless. Spread happy truths instead

IF YOU Google the phrase "Middle East rumors", the first link that pops up is not, as you might expect, a website propagating conspiracy theories. It is Coca-Cola's website. For several years now the company has struggled to rebut ridiculous rumors about its products.

For example, some people believe that if you read Coke's Arabic logo backwards, it says: "No Muhammad, No Mecca". Others insist that the company is owned by Jews, or that it bankrolls Israel. These rumors are one reason why Coke does worse than Pepsi in Arab countries. Yet they are all false, as Coke's website explains in painstaking detail.

Such rebuttals are unwise, argue Derek Rucker and David Dubois, of the Kellogg School of Management, and Zakary Tormala, of Stanford business school, three psychologists. By restating the rumours, Coke helps to propagate them. Its web page is a magnet for search engines. And people who read rebuttals tend to forget the denial and remember only the rumour, says Mr Rucker.

As information is passed around, important qualifiers are lost. A rumor may start as "I'm not sure if this is true, but I heard that..." Then it evolves into: "I heard that..." Finally it becomes: "Did you know that...?" Even when no one intends to spread falsehoods, they spread.

In several experiments, Mr Rucker and Mr Dubois planted rumors among undergraduates. They found that with each repetition, scepticism diminished. The rumors themselves did not change; only the likelihood that the students would believe them. These findings were published in a report called "The Failure to Transmit Certainty".

Instead of denying false rumors, a company should put out a stream of positive messages about itself, reckon Mr Rucker and Mr Dubois. This deprives myths of oxygen and also nudges people to doubt nasty things they may hear about the company in question.

Other companies could learn from this. McDonald's hamburgers have been said to contain worm meat, Procter and Gamble is reputed to have Satanic links and Facebook is rumored to be shutting down so that its founder, Mark Zuckerberg, can have his life back. All these rumours are utterly false, but the firms in question would be well advised not to bother denying them.

The organization offers a variety of events in the Atlanta area for networking, training, and education. One such regular meeting is termed "TAG Breakfast Series," a monthly meeting where experts and guest speakers fly in from all over to illuminate the attendees in a specific niche.

Another recurring event includes the "CIO Certification Series." This five-week training program helps train aspiring and existing CIOs and CTOs to learn tools and techniques essential to success in these positions.

TAG seeks to inspire and assist aspiring entrepreneurs in Georgia and the region by bringing in top-notch guests and industry high achievers. Many websites stumble around the Internet in total obscurity. With so many competing websites, even if the website was the best site ever produced or the services or products provided could potentially change the world the website might never get noticed. That is why, unless you know millions of people that can visit your site, purchase your services or buy your products, you are going to need a SEO Company to help people know that your website is open and ready for traffic and business.
The question many people have is what exactly is SEO. Basically, SEO is a campaign that uses blogs, articles and forum post, and videos, just to name a few, that create backlinks to your website. This allows web crawlers to read these article submissions, notice the backlinks and this basically equates to higher search engine results.
You may wonder what good a SEO service can do for you. The bottom line is that when people do a search online for a particular service, product or content, there are often thousands of search result returns. However, most people will only view 2 to possibly 3 pages at the most. If you can get your site on those first 1 to 2  pages you will more than likely notice an increase in traffic and, as most people online will tell you, more traffic means more revenue.
Now, if you have any sort of knowledge about this process, you might have heard that you can do this yourself; and the truth is that you can indeed. However, it can be a very time consuming and complicated process. It requires time and effort on your part, far more that what eBooks on the subject will tell you.
This is why you will want have a search engine optimization company on your side. These professional services can create a plan to fit your particular needs and your budget. The great thing about using an SEO approach to marketing your website is that you can have a quality marketing plan for your website that is both effective and affordable.
So, if your website is languishing in obscurity and you see no way out, then try SEO to help increase your websites traffic and help the profitability of your site.

Global advertising spending will grow by 4.5% in 2011, double the rate of the previous year, according to ZenithOptimedia, an ad agency. The general upturn masks diverse underlying trends. Online ad spending barely missed a beat during the economic downturn; it will grow by 16% in 2011, boosting its share of all advertising to just over 15%. Sprinkling ads around search-engine results will account for around half of internet advertising.

Revenue from television advertising, the largest venue for spending, will rise by 5.5%, a modest acceleration from 2010. Telly's growth will be led by emerging markets, where it is an even more dominant medium than in the rich world.

The bad news will continue for newspapers and magazines, with advertising declines of 1.5% and 1.1% respectively. Although extending print-media brands online offers some hope of reversing the downturn, the World Association of Newspapers says "at no time in the foreseeable future" will digital advertising revenue replace that lost to print. To make up the difference, outlets will introduce more fees for online content, with the erection of a paywall at the website for the New York Times expected early in the year.

The geographical pattern of media revenues will continue shifting east. ZenithOptimedia estimates that 2011 will mark the first year in which advertisers spend more to reach Asian than west European audiences.

To watch: Personal ads. No, not that kind. In Japan, 2010 saw trials of digital billboards equipped with cameras and facial-recognition software that scan passers-by and deliver targeted advertisements based on a person's apparent age and gender. JR East Water Business, a drinks firm, introduced a vending machine that suggests products based on these demographic hunches; it hopes to have 500 of the machines installed in railway stations by 2012.
4th Annual Event Sponsored By TAG and TechAmerica Georgia

Brings Technology Community's Concerns To Legislators

ATLANTA (Jan. 31, 2011) - Members of the state's technology industry will gather at the Georgia Capitol Feb. 9th for their 4th annual "High-Tech Day" to voice their concerns to legislators.

Sponsored by the Technology Association of Georgia and TechAmerica Georgia, this year's event will include a luncheon featuring a panel of chief information officers (CIOs) from the public and private sector discussing the challenges they face in their roles.

The panel will be moderated by Sen. John Albers, R-Roswell, and include Todd Bell, Verizon; Brian Shield, The Weather Channel; Venkat Krishnan, Department of Human Resources; Tom McMurry, Department of Driver Services; and Sterling Wharton, Centers of Innovation. High-Tech Day will conclude with a reception for legislators and the technology community from 6-8 pm at the Georgia Freight Depot in downtown Atlanta.

During this year's session, the state's technology community is supporting a bill, sponsored by Sen. Barry Loudermilk, R-Cassville, chairman of the Senate Science and Technology Committee that would create a study commission to develop a strategic plan for science and technology in Georgia.

"The technology industry continues to be the job growth engine for the future for the state," said Tino Mantella, president, TAG.  "In order to be competitive with other states, we need a comprehensive plan, developed by a public-private partnership, that will provide the vision and direction we need to make Georgia one the top 5 technology states in the country."

-More-

Georgia was recently ranked 25th for technology by the Milken Institute - a dramatic decline from the state's once 14th place ranking in 2002. State technology leaders want to move higher in the rankings and believe a more strategic approach is needed to accomplish that goal.

During the 2010 legislative session, several technology community supported bills passed including:

·         Angel Investor Tax Credit

·         Public Pension Reform - Fire Fighters Fund

·         E-Textbook funding
