In this role, Jones will support the continued growth of TAG programs and is responsible of the strategic direction and management of membership development, recruitment and retention of Individual, Corporate Level One and Two members. In addition, she will be responsible for planning several events, including two of TAG's largest events of the year: the Georgia Technology Summit and Excalibur Awards.

Atlanta Immigration Attorney Karen Weinstock Applauds New DHS Policy that Gives Hope to Many in Deportation Proceedings
DHS Secretary said yesterday that DHS will halt deportation proceedings on a case-by-case basis against undocumented immigrants who are low enforcement priority for ICE and meet certain criteria such as attending school, having family in the military or are primarily responsible for other family members' care. The move comes after Hispanic and Democrat leaders pressured urged President Obama to help the immigration cause while Congress is gridlocked. DHS will review all ongoing cases and see who meets the new criteria on a case-by-case basis.
"This is a wonderful and surprising move by DHS and very encouraging for people whose only offense was to stay in the country illegally", said Atlanta immigration attorney Karen Weinstock, "You have to know that the new rules only apply to those people in deportation proceedings without final orders. Right now it does not apply for people that are in the country illegally who are not in proceedings, or people who already completed their deportation proceedings", added the Atlanta immigration lawyer.
"DHS will have to develop more concrete guidance on how to provide for appropriate prosecutorial discretion because many ICE field offices, including here in Atlanta, do not do it often enough or for worthy causes. It is still unclear how many people will be affected by this move or what the exact factors will be", explained the Georgia Immigration attorney.
"ICE already issued a few prosecutorial discretion memos recently that are yet to be implemented across the board, so I am still very skeptical about the application of the policy shift. The main beneficiaries of this new guidelines will probably be DREAM Act qualified students (people who were brought here as children and completed college)", added Karen Weinstock, Atlanta immigration attorney and the managing attorney of the Atlanta Immigration Law Firm Siskind Susser.
"Individuals whose deportation proceedings are closed are not going to be legalized, they will not receive a visa, green card or any new type of legal status. Some may be eligible for a temporary work permit, however, this does not convey legal status in the U.S.", added the Georgia immigration lawyer Karen Weinstock.
"The move will free up immigration officers and immigration courts to handle cases involving serious criminals, and this is a very welcome move by the Obama administration because the majority of deported individuals these days at least in Georgia are low priority non-criminals that were detained due to minor violations", concluded the immigration attorney in Atlanta.

Industry Expert Will Provide Keynote at August 30th Event
ATLANTA (August 22, 2011) - Dan Rastler, senior project manager for the energy storage program at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), Palo, Alto, Calif., will be the keynote speaker at a Technology Association of Georgia (TAG) Smart Grid society seminar on battery storage Aug. 30.
Rastler will join several energy storage experts in discussing trends and innovations in the $500 million battery storage industry during the event from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Alston & Bird, 1180 W. Peachtree St., Atlanta.
The seminar will also include a panel discussion with Ken Caird, senior transmission and distribution systems engineer, GE Energy; Clifton Black, senior research engineer, Southern Company; and Vincent Pusateri, senior director, business development, GS Battery USA. The panel discussion will be moderated by Sean Atkins, partner, Alston & Bird.
"Despite the large anticipated need for energy storage solutions within the electric enterprise, very few grid-integrated storage installations are in actual operation in the United States today," said Rastler. "This landscape is expected to change around 2011-2012, when a host of new storage options supported by more than $250 million in U.S. stimulus funding begin to emerge and, in turn, catalyze a portfolio of new energy storage demonstrations."
The battery storage event is the fourth in a series of programs on a wide range of smart grid technologies sponsored by the TAG Smart Grid society. The group's mission is to raise awareness and the development of smart grid technologies in Georgia.

TAG Annual Run/Walk Encourages Healthy Lifestyles and Supports Organizational Camaraderie through Corporate Team Challenge

The Techie 5K/10K Run/Walk was created to support healthy competition and networking among Georgia's technology community. This is the first year that the 5K race is being added to the established 10K, and both races are USATF certified for Peachtree Road Race seeding.

DHS Policies Must Change so that U.S. Immigration Policy Can Spark Economy and Attract Entrepreneurs

Earlier this week the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director Alejandro Mayorkas announced a series of policy initiatives designed to "fuel the nation's economy and stimulate investment" by attracting foreign entrepreneurs who can create jobs and form startup companies. This followed the President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness meeting in Palo Alto, CA, which included a number of Silicon Valley CEOs who highlighted the need for immigration reform because the struggling U.S. economy needs more entrepreneurs and highly skilled workers who can help to create jobs.
"While it is encouraging that DHS and USCIS recognize that immigrant entrepreneurs are a key to continued growth in America's economy, it is imperative that the policies easing the requirements for them be changed throughout the chain-of-command and reach the adjudicators of visa applications", said Atlanta immigration lawyer Karen Weinstock, "Because right now we have one of the strictest adjudication policies that directly prevent foreign entrepreneurs from establishing businesses here", added the Atlanta immigration attorney.
"An Entrepreneur from India or China who owns a majority share in a U.S. company that employs other Americans is prohibited under current DHS policies from obtaining an H-1B visa", explained the Georgia Immigration attorney. "And since there is no investment or trade treaty with neither India nor China, DHS is killing pretty much the only option for nationals of these countries, as well as others, which is something they could have prevented by merely changing their policies", added Karen Weinstock, immigration attorney in Atlanta and the managing attorney of the Atlanta Immigration Law Firm Siskind Susser.
"Actually, a new report by the Partnership for a New American Economy, entitled The "New American" Fortune 500, finds that immigrants founded 18 percent of all Fortune 500 companies, generating $1.7 trillion in annual revenue and employing 3.7 million workers worldwide. This report shows that this is evidence of how immigrants create American jobs and drive our economy, but the U.S. immigration system often forces immigrant entrepreneurs away, instead of welcoming them, which is a shame", added the Atlanta Immigration attorney Karen Weinstock.
"Most hurdles to bring immigrant entrepreneurs to the U.S. or make them stay are the fault of our broken immigration system, very restrictive criteria and not enough flexibility but DHS and especially USCIS should take a large part of the blame because of their strict adjudication policies, which is something that would be very welcome if they actually change what is in their power to", concluded the Georgia immigration lawyer.
