How to know if you have sleep apnea?

Patients who have trouble sleeping at night or experience other symptoms are often tested for sleep apnea. Tests usually consist of examining a family history, physical exams, and sleep studies to positively diagnose the condition. Common symptoms of sleep apnea include loud snoring, restlessness at night, and sleepiness during the day. If you have any of these symptoms, your doctor may suggest that you get tested for sleep apnea. When taking a family history, your doctor will ask you and your family how you sleep at night, how often you take naps during the day, and how loud your snoring is. During the physical exam, your doctor will check your mouth, nose, and throat for excess or large tissue that may be blocking your breathing passages while sleeping. If your doctor recommends a sleep study for you, this is typically performed at a facility where they monitor your breathing, heart rate, and blood-oxygen levels while you sleep.

If you are diagnosed with this condition, there are a few sleep apnea treatment options that you will have available. Depending on the level of sleep apnea you have, your doctor may recommend different options. One of the sleep apnea treatment options is making a lifestyle change, which can improve your symptoms and make it easier to breathe when sleeping. Lifestyle changes include losing weight, sleeping on your side, and using nasal sprays before bed to promote better breathing. Mouth pieces and surgery are two other options that are commonly recommended by doctors. Some machines used may lead to the necessity of ear dizziness treatments because they may cause a certain type of vertigo, which can also lead to partial hearing loss. If your doctor also recommends hearing aids, digital devices are available to reverse the effects and ease any additional symptoms.
